SP-MD Series — Membrane Distillation Modules
PTFE hydrophobic hollow fibre MD for thermal brine concentration
Product description
Membrane distillation is a separation and concentration technology that uses the vapour pressure difference between the feed and permeate sides of a hydrophobic membrane — a difference created by temperature — as the driving force for separation. Water vapour passes through the dry, non-wetting pores while liquid water and dissolved salts are rejected at the membrane surface.
The SP-MD (PTFE-MD-2020) module is built from PTFE hollow fibre membranes that effectively remove volatile components from aqueous solutions, making it widely applicable for water distillation, seawater desalination and deep concentration of RO brine beyond the osmotic-pressure limits of conventional pressure-driven membranes.
Because the driving force is thermal rather than hydraulic, the SP-MD series operates at near-atmospheric pressure and can be powered by low-grade waste heat — hot water, low-pressure steam or solar thermal — turning otherwise wasted energy into recovered water and concentrated product streams.
Specifications

Module performance depends on feed temperature, permeate-side temperature and feed salinity. Contact SV-NanoMetrix engineering for duty-specific sizing.

Performance figures are nominal values obtained under the standard test conditions stated with each table. Actual performance varies with feedwater chemistry, pretreatment, flux, recovery, temperature, pressure and operating practice. Individual element flow may vary from the nominal value. Specifications are subject to change without notice — request the current datasheet before specifying.
Typical applications
- Seawater or brackish water desalination — enhancing utilisation of water resources
- Industrial wastewater treatment and reuse — deep treatment to minimise RO brine discharge, approaching zero liquid discharge
- Concentration of brine — deep processing of concentrated brine from seawater desalination
- Concentration or purification of salt solutions in chemical plants — improving resource recovery rates
- Acid and alkali concentration — raising concentration efficiency of acidic and caustic solutions
- Concentration of aqueous solutions containing non-volatile or semi-volatile organics — enabling organics recovery
